Psychotic Disorders

Understanding Psychotic Disorders

At Prisma Recovery Center, we are aware of the barriers and challenges that come with the treatment of psychotic disorders. While these are serious mental health conditions, there is treatment available to help manage symptoms and a whole-person healing approach.

The Need for Inpatient Treatment

Psychotic disorders are a group of serious mental health conditions characterized by a disconnection from reality. They often make it challenging to make sound judgments, respond emotionally, think clearly, and communicate effectively. This detachment can manifest through hallucinations, delusions, and other disorganized thinking patterns that can significantly impact a person’s day-to-day functioning and quality of life. These disorders range from more common conditions like schizophrenia to complex and rarer illnesses such as postpartum psychosis.

Psychotic Disorders We Treat At Prisma

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is perhaps the most well-known psychotic disorder, but understanding its intricacies is challenging. At Prisma Recovery Center, patients with schizophrenia benefit from an integrative treatment model that addresses not only the symptoms but also the social, emotional, and cognitive facets of their lives. Our team works with individuals to develop a personalized treatment plan that may include medication management, psychological therapies, and social support systems. We utilize all available tools to create a treatment plan that works for the individual, not the diagnosis.

Schizoaffective Disorder

Schizoaffective disorder combines symptoms of schizophrenia with those of a mood disorder, such as major depression or bipolar disorder. This complex condition often requires specialized care that recognizes and treats various symptoms. Prisma Recovery Center’s approach to schizoaffective disorder involves close collaboration between our clinical team and other professionals to ensure a balanced and comprehensive treatment plan that is effective for the patient. This may include medication management and other therapies to form a beneficial treatment plan.

Dissociation and Dissociative Disorders

Dissociation is a natural defense mechanism that helps individuals cope with traumatic experiences. In some cases, this process becomes so intense or prolonged that it results in dissociative disorders, which can include dissociative identity disorder (formerly known as multiple personality disorder) and depersonalization disorder. Our inpatient treatment at Prisma Recovery Center for these disorders involves creating a safe environment where individuals can explore their experiences under the guidance of trained specialists and learn how to lead a fulfilling life.

Postpartum Psychosis

Postpartum psychosis is a severe form of postpartum depression, occurring in approximately 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 deliveries. Its rapid onset and acute symptoms necessitate urgent and specialized care. Prisma Recovery Center is equipped to provide a holistic approach that stabilizes the immediate crisis and supports the individual in their postpartum recovery through therapy, medication, and family involvement. There is a connection between having previous psychotic episodes or disorders and postpartum psychosis.

Prisma's Approach for Treating Psychotic Disorders

We are dedicated and pride ourselves on our personalized and compassionate care. Our program’s core is a commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment for our patients to receive the treatment they need to move toward recovery.

Comprehensive Approach

Recognizing that psychotic disorders require a multifaceted response, our inpatient program brings together a team of expert clinical, medical, and support staff. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that every aspect of a patient’s health and well-being is taken into consideration. We utilize our team fully to allow for the best outcomes for patients.

Individualized Treatment Plans

No two journeys through mental health treatment are the same. We recognize that and take a thorough evaluation during admission to our facility to ensure that we can begin crafting a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s unique needs. We monitor and respond accordingly and adjust as needed to provide thorough and effective treatment.

Therapeutic Interventions

Therapy plays a crucial role in the treatment process. Our inpatient program for psychotic disorders offers a range of therapeutic interventions, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), art and music therapy, and more. These modalities and interventions are structured to help patients manage symptoms, improve coping mechanisms, and work on interpersonal skills.

Medical Management and Stabilization

For many individuals with psychotic disorders, the use of medication can be a stabilizing force, enabling them to engage more effectively in therapy and daily living activities. Our medical team is dedicated to the safe and effective use of psychiatric medications, closely monitoring their impact and making adjustments as needed.

Family Involvement and Support

Psychotic disorders can significantly strain individuals and their families. Prisma Recovery Center knows the importance of family involvement in the treatment and recovery process. We offer support and education through our family support groups.

Aftercare Planning for Long-Term Success

Recovery from a psychotic disorder is not an event but a long-term process. Our inpatient program is committed to preparing patients to transition back into their everyday lives by offering an extensive discharge and aftercare planning process. This includes connection to the appropriate level of care for ongoing treatment, outpatient services, and ongoing support through our alumni program to maintain the progress made during inpatient treatment.
